Case Study: The Lincoln Journal Star Gives Back to Community

Today’s Deal turns local savings into local caring

Background:

The Lincoln Journal Star developed Today’s Deal as a way to help local consumers get the best deals Lincoln has to offer. Each weekday at 6 a.m., the Journal Star offers a half price or better deal to a local restaurant or retailer. Each deal has a minimum number of sales (usually 25) that must be attained for the deal to be activated. Once the minimum number is surpassed, the deal “tips,” and everyone who chooses to buy receives the deal. A portion of all proceeds are donated to a local non-profit organization each month in the form of cash or advertising trade with the Journal Star online or in print.

The Story:

Since May 2010, Today’s Deal from The Lincoln Journal Star and its customers have donated more than $9,000 to local charities.

“Each month we select a local charitable organization through an application process and that organization receives a percentage of our total Today’s Deal profits for the selected month. It has been a very exciting and rewarding experience to be able to give back to the community each month through this program and it help differentiate us in the group buy market!”
Natalia Shybut, Advertising Manager-Recruitment/Real Estate/Digital

Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters was a recent donation recipient.

“Thank you so much for your part in the Today’s Deal charitable donation to Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters. Receiving a check for over $3,000 today was AMAZING! These funds will be used to support existing matches of ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles,’ along with finding matches for the ‘Littles’ on our waiting list. All of us at HBBBS are overjoyed by this generous support!”
Melinda Way-Stone, Director of Community Relations
